Des Plaines River Bike Trail

  • Saturday, May 21, 2016
  • 8:00 AM
  • trailhead parking lot on Russell Road in Wadsworth, IL
The riders will leave at 8:00 am from the trailhead parking lot on Russell Road in Wadsworth, IL. (Google Map Location)

(NOTE: Parking is limited at this site. DO NOT park in the grass, or in the Horse Trailer Parking. You WILL be ticketed, and we have a lot of experience with this. Additional parking is somewhat close at the canoe site approximately 0.5 mile further east on Russell Road, but you will have about a 0.5 mile ride to the start (Google Map Location)

This will be roughly a 36 mile round trip. We will stop for breakfast at the halfway point in downtown Libertyville. We should return between 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM. No one will be left behind. Riders who want a shorter trip can turn around at the 9 mile point in Gurnee, IL.

The Des Plaines River Trail is a real jewel. It follows the Des Plaines River through the Lake County Forest Preserve. Bridges and underpasses make it possible to travel without crossing any major roads. The terrain ranges from flat to gently rolling hills. There is wildlife and scenery galore. The surface is crushed gravel, suitable for bikes with wider tires. Road bikes are iffy if the trail is muddy. There are three bathrooms on the trail, one of which is heated. You can check the link below for more information on the trail and the forest preserve.
