October is the traditional time to sign up for bus trips to ski up north with the Nordic Ski Club. The Oct. 16 member meeting also will provide lessons in how martial-arts principles of balance and core strength may enhance your cross-country ski techniques. Ron Oshima, an instructor with the Milwaukee Aikido Club, will talk about and give a demonstration of key aikido principles. Wear loose-fitting clothing and you can practice some techniques. You also can bring ski or hiking poles. The defensive art of aikido is about taking your opponent’s balance through connection and internal weight shifting, says Oshima. ”I keep my shoulders relaxed and low and connect my latissimus to the lower muscles.” This creates strength and stability in your core.
Oshima, a new member of the ski club, says he is not an expert cross-country skier. Yet he sees how aikido concepts quickly apply to skiing. For balance and flowing movement, you would relax the upper body, visualize moving your center forward, and move your legs from your core. “At its highest level, aikido is a ‘Discipline of Coordination,’ or a way of harmonizing all of one’s vital powers,” according to the Milwaukee Aikido Club website. The building is at Kinnickinnic and Lincoln avenues in Bay View.
Winter Ski Trips Sign-up Guidelines
Flyers for each of the Nordic Ski Club’s four winter ski trips (by bus) will be sent to club members in October. DO NOT MAIL THESE FLYERS IN IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND THE OCT. 16 MONTHLY MEETING.
The Oct. 16 meeting is the FIRST chance to sign up for these trips. You can bring signup forms from others who cannot attend Oct. 16, but please note the signup order:
1st) Program committee members, board members and ski trip leaders;
2nd) People physically present at the signup meeting. One member of a household membership can bring all registrations for their household;
3rd) Signups brought to the meeting for participants who are not present in the signup line, as well as ski-trip registrations received by the ski-trip leader no later than Oct. 15 will be placed in a random drawing;
4th) Mailed registrations arriving on or after Oct. 16.
These flyers have been mailed so that you can fill out the signup form and write your check (made to NSCM) for the deposit amount for that ski trip. All ski trips offer an option of receiving the trip letter via e-mail. If you DO NOT select the e-mail option, please bring a self-addressed, stamped, business-size envelope (9 1/2” x 4 1/8”) for each trip to the Oct. 16meeting.
Signups begin at 7:00 p.m., and it's first come, first served. Please note that "four to a room" means that there are four people and two beds with two people sharing a bed.
