Snowshoeing is permitted in designated areas only; it is not allowed on groomed/designated cross-country ski trails. 

Milwaukee County

All Milwaukee County Parks allow free cross-country skiing when snow conditions permit.
They require 6" of snow to groom trails.  Ungroomed trails are available for your enjoyment whenever Mother Nature cooperates.  Trails are open from dawn until 10 p.m.

Brown Deer Park,
 Directions:  North side of Milwaukee.  West side of Range Line Rd. between Brown Deer Rd. and Green Bay Rd.  7835 N. Green Bay Rd., Milwaukee, WI Information:  phone (414) 352-7502 (unit office).
4.5 miles of trails. Groomed for skate/freestyle and classical/diagonal; beginner & intermediate skier.  Flat, gentle terrain; wooded & open; shelter; toilets; ice skating.

Whitnall Park, Directions: Southwest side of Milwaukee near Hales Corners. 5879 S. 92nd St., Hales Corners, WI
Information: phone (414) 525-4756(unit office). Snowshoe Trails are located across 92nd St. by Ross Lodge.

5.6 miles of lightly groomed trails. Groomed for classical/diagonal; beginner & intermediate skier.  Gentle, rolling terrain; wooded & open; shelter; concession; toilets; ski rentals.

Waukesha County
*
Lapham Peak State Forest:  17.5 miles including 2.5 miles of lighted trail.  Groomed for skate/freestyle and classical/diagonal; beginner, intermediate, & expert skier. Mix of gentle & hilly terrain with steep climbs & descents; wooded; snow making availability; 2 shelters (Evergreen and Homestead Hollow); toilets; drinking water; ski rentals are usually available at red barn near Evergreen Shelter.  Snowshoe trails follow the Ice Age Trail.  Open 7AM – 10 PM in the winter.  Wi state sticker required; purchase at park.  Trail pass required. 
Directions:  25 miles west of Milwaukee and 1 mile south of I-94 near Delafield on Cnty. Rd. C.  W329 N846 Hwy C, Delafield, WI Information:  phone (262) 646-4421 for trail conditions.  (262) 646-3025 (Lapham Peak office). 

*Minooka County Park:  6 miles (3 loops) of trails.  Groomed for skate/freestyle and classical/diagonal; beginner & intermediate skier.   Gentle, rolling terrain; mix of woods & open fields; no shelter; outhouse.  Open sunrise to 10 PM.  Waukesha County sticker required, purchase at park. 
Directions:  2 miles southeast of Waukesha at corner of Racine Ave. and Sunset Dr.  Take I-94 west.  Merge onto Hwy 18W/E Moreland Blvd. toward Waukesha.  Turn slight left onto Hwy 164S.  Turn slight left on Cnty. Rd.-Y/E Racine Av.  Turn right onto E. Sunset Dr.  The park is on the left.  1927 E. Sunset Dr., Waukesha, WI Information:  phone (262) 896-8006.

*Nashotah County Park:  6 miles (3 loops) of trails.  Groomed for skate/freestyle and classical/diagonal; beginner & intermediate skier.  Gentle, rolling to hilly terrain; wooded; no shelter; pit toilets.  Open sunrise to 10 PM.  Waukesha County sticker required, purchase at park.
Directions:  located between the communities of Oconomowoc and Hartland.  Take I-94 west.  Slight turn to the right at Hwy 16W (signs for Hwy 16W/Pewaukee).  Take Exit 179 to merge onto Cnty.. Rd. C/Lakeland Dr.  Continue to follow Cnty. Rd. C.  Park is on the left. W330N4799 Cnty. Rd. C, Nashotah, WI  Information:  phone (262) 367-1022.

*Retzer Nature Center:  No cross country ski trails.  Snowshoe trails; rental $5.50/person for 4 hrs.  Open 7 days a week from 8 AM - 4:30 PM.  Waukesha Country sticker required; purchase at park.
Direction: Take I94 west to Cnty. Rd.  G.  Take the Cnty.. Rd. G/Cnty.. Rd.  TT exit (Exit 291) toward Pewaukee/Waukesha.  Turn left (south) on Meadowbrook Rd.  Meadowbrook Rd. becomes Cnty.. Rd. TT.  Turn right (west) on Madison St. to the entrance. S14 W28167 Madison St., Waukesha, WI  Information:  (262) 896-8007.

Kettle Moraine State Forest – Northern Unit

*Greenbush Trail:  combination of four loops totaling 9-10 miles including 2 km of lighted trail. Groomed for skate/freestyle and classical/diagonal; intermediate & expert skier.  Well-groomed, hilly trails; wooded; heated shelter; vault toilets at trailhead.   7 miles of snow shoe trails.  2009-2010:  snowshoe hikes led by Northern Kettle Moraine Ski Club on Tuesdays and Sundays at 1 PM, meet at the shelter.  Sledding hill.  WI state sticker required.  
Directions: US 45 N to HWY 67 E to Kettle Moraine Dr N; then follow Green Bush signs; parking lots on the left. Greenbush, WI 
 
*New Fane: Combination of four loops totaling 7.7. miles.  Ungroomed; moderately challenging trails; mostly wooded; no shelter; toilets.  5.5. miles of snowshoe trails.  WI state sticker required.
Directions: Take Hwy 45 north to Kewaskum.  Turn right/east on Hwy 28, left/north on Cnty. Rd. S, continue on S as it turns right/east and south onto Kettle Moraine Dr. The trails are on the left. 

*Pike Lake State Park: 7 miles.  Groomed for skate/freestyle and classical/diagonal; intermediate skier.   Rolling terrain with some steep hills; wooded; toilet at trailhead; warming shelter near the south picnic area. WI state sticker required; purchase at park.  Trail passes required. Directions:  Take Hwy 45 north to Hwy 41 north and exit at Hwy 60. Go west 3.5 miles and turn left into Pike Lake Park; trail parking is on the left. To get to beach parking & the shelter, stay on Hwy 60 one more mile to take a left on Kettle Moraine Drive; the park is one mile on the right. 3544 Kettle Moraine Dr., Hartford, WI  Information:  (262) 670-3400.

*Zillmer:  11.4 miles of looped trails.  Groomed for skate/freestyle and classical/diagonal; beginner, intermediate & expert skier.  Gentle, rolling, & hilly terrain; wooded; toilets. WI state sticker required; purchase at park. Directions:  Located near the town of Campbellsport on Cnty. Rd. SS approximately 2  miles southeast of Hwy 67.  Take Hwy 45 north past Kewaskum. Right on Hwy 67. Right on SS.  Proceed one mile. Park is on the left.

Kettle Moraine State Forest – Southern Unit

*McMiller Sports Center (ski trails & gun club):  17 miles of trails, 5 ski loops.  Groomed for skate/free style and classical/diagonal; beginner, intermediate, & expert skier.  Wooded; large heated shelter with indoor restrooms (open on weekends) and outhouses. Sound of gunfire from target ranges; two or three “quiet” weekends per winter for skiers.  Wi state sticker required.  Trail pass required.
Directions:  Located 2.5 miles south of the Village of Eagle on Cnty. Rd. NN.  From Eagle, take Hwy 67 south, turn right/west on Cnty. Rd. NN to the McMiller entrance.  Or, take Hwy 43 south to Mukwonago exit.  Proceed through town.  Turn left (west) on Cnty. Rd. NN and proceed to Hwy 67.  Turn left (south) on Hwy 67. Turn right (west) on Cnty. Rd. NN to McMiller. S103 W38754 Highway NN, Eagle.

*Nordic Trail:  Named after the Nordic Ski Club of Milwaukee because it was designed by a member of our club.  18.2 miles of trails; 7 ski loops.  Groomed for skate/free style and classical/diagonal; beginner, intermediate, & expert skier.  Gentle, rolling, & steep terrain; wooded; shelter; vault toilets.  Sledding available. Snowshoe trails on west side of HWY H.  WI state sticker required; purchase at park.. Trail pass required. Directions:  Located north of the town of LaGrange on Cnty. Rd. H (Kettle Moraine Dr.).  Take Wi-12 to Cnty. Rd. H.  Proceed north on H, 1 ½ miles to the trailhead on the east (right) side of the road.  Food (sit-down & take out) available at the General Store in LaGrange (Wi-12 & Cnty. Rd. H).

*Scuppernong:  11.5 miles of trails, 3 loops.  Groomed for classical/diagonal only; beginner, intermediate, & expert skier.  Rolling to hilly terrain; wooded; no shelter; vault toilets.  WI state sticker required; purchase at park. Trail passes required.
Directions:  Located north of Eagle: I-94 W to HWY 67 S; to Co. Hwy ZZ E. Parking lot on north side of ZZ.

Farther from Milwaukee:
*Black River Falls State Forest:  25 miles of trails. Groomed for skate/free style and classical/diagonal; beginner, intermediate, & expert skier.  Hilly; wooded; toilets.
Directions:  located near Millston, western WI, approx. 2 hrs. north of Madison near I-94.  Wildcat parking is located 4 miles northeast of Millston on N. Settlement Rd.;  Smrekar lot is 4 miles east of Millston on Cnty. Rd. O, proceed north about 1 mile on Smrekar Rd. 910 Hwy 54 East, Black River, WI Information:  DNR (715) 284-1400

Jack Lake:  10 miles of trails, 5 loops.  Groomed for skate/free style and classical/diagonal; beginner, intermediate, & expert skier.  Wooded & open terrain with glacial features; shelter at midway point of the trail; outhouse.  Donation at trailhead. Directions:  Take Hwy 45 north, approximately 18 miles north of Antigo.  Turn right/east on Cnty. Rd. J approximately 2 miles to trailhead on the left. Hwy J, Deerbrook, WI 54424. Green Bay Reforestation Camp:  15 miles of trails.  Groomed for skate/free style and classical/diagonal; beginner & intermediate skier.  Wooded & open terrain; large heated shelter with toilets; concession; trail fee. (Shelter closed on Christmas and New Years day.) Directions:  Wi-41/141 north from Green Bay to Exit 176 (Cnty. Rd. B/Suamico/Sunset Beach Rd.).  Turn left on Cnty. Rd. B.  Proceed approximately 4 miles, turn right on Cnty. Rd. IR.  The Reforestation Camp is straight ahead on Reforestation Rd./Cnty. Rd. *Hartman Creek:  6.8 miles of classic/diagonal, 2.2 miles of skate/free style.  Not always groomed; beginner & intermediate.  Wooded and open terrain; unheated shelter; toilets.  Directions:  6 miles SW of Waupaca off of Hwy 54.  N22480 Hartman Creek Rd., Waupaca, WI  Information:  (715) 258-2372.

Iola Winter Sports Club Trails:  12.5 miles of trails including 4 miles of lighted trail.  Groomed for skate/free style and classical/diagonal; beginner, intermediate, & expert skier.  Wooded; large warming shelter with toilets; concession; open week-ends and most nights; trail fee for nonmembers. Directions:  Take Hwy 49, 5 miles north of Iola.  Turn left (west) on Cnty. Rd. MM to Norseman Hill.  Trails are on the right (north).  Information:  (715) 445-3411.

Minocqua Winter Park:  Some of the best skiing in the Midwest.  75 km of trails.  Groomed for skate/free style and classical/diagonal; beginner, intermediate, & expert skier.  Wooded and open terrain; large warming shelter with toilets; concession; waxing room; ski shop with ski rentals and lessons.  5 km of snowshoe trails; snowshoe rentals.  Trail fee. Directions:  North on US-51 to WI 70 W; left at Squirrel Lake Rd; left on Scotchman Lake Rd; right on Squirrel Hill Rd which becomes Winter Park Rd, 1.0 mi.12375 Scotchman Lake Rd., Minocqua, WI  Information:  (715) 356-3309.

Moccasin Lake:  6+ miles of trails.  Groomed for skate/freestyle and classical/diagonal; beginner & intermediate skier.  Wooded; shelter at midpoint of trail; large parking lot; outdoor toilets.  Donation at trailhead. Directions:  Take Hwy 45 north through Antigo to Elcho.  Turn left/west on Moccasin Lake Rd.  Follow to road leading to the trailhead. 1633 Neva Rd., Antigo. Nine Mile Forest:  18.3 miles of trails including 6.3 miles of lighted trail.  Groomed for skate/freestyle and classical/diagonal; beginner, intermediate, & expert skier.  Wooded & open; large warming shelter with toilets; ski rentals.  4.7 miles of snowshoe trails; snowshoe rental.  Daily or annual pass required. 
Directions:  Take I-39/US 51 to CTH N, west on CTH N 3 ½ miles to Red Bud Road, south on Red Bud Road 1 ½ miles to the chalet parking lot. 8704 Red Bud Rd., Wausau, WI Information:  chalet (715) 693-3001.  24 hour hotline: 1-888-948-4748. 

*Peninsula State Park:  16 miles of trails; 6 miles for skate skiing.  Groomed for classical/diagonal; 6 miles groomed for skate/freestyle ski; beginner, intermediate, & expert skier.  Gentle, rolling, & hilly; wooded; warming shelter near Lot 5 on Highland Rd.; toilets.  WI state sticker required; purchase at park.  Trail pass required. Directions:  Take Hwy 43 north to Hwy 57 north. Continue north on Hwy 57 to Hwy 42 north through the village of Fish Creek in Door County.
